Hercília Guimarães is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Porto University. She obtained her Doutoramento degree in 1993 from the Faculty of Medicine of the same university. Guimarães?s most recent participations include her appointment as President of the Union of Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (UENPS) from 2008 to 2010, and Vice President of Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (UENPS) from 2006 to 2008. She is currently a Member of the Executive Committee of European Foundation for Care of the Newborn Infant (EFCNI) and has been so since 2006. Her domains of specialization include paediatrics and neonatology, and her present research interests comprise mechanisms of lung development, pulmonary neonatal pathology, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, ethics in perinatology, and neonatal palliative care.
