Gert J. de Borst

Gert J. de Borst was born in Utrecht , the Netherlands in 1970. Following medical school at the University of Utrecht he obtained his medical degree in 1996 and graduated in September 1999. Subsequently he became a research fellow at the Department of Vascular Surgery of the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht where he participated in a substudy of the Dutch Bypass Oral anticoagulant or aspirin study (BOA trial). In the same period he performed animal experiments on endovascular venous valve transplantation. In 2001 he started his residency in general surgery at the department of Surgery (Prof dr IHM Borel Rinkes). Between January 2007 and December 2009 he did a fellowship in Vascular Surgery (Prof dr FL Moll). Since april 2009 he works as a vascular surgeon at the department of Vascular Surgery of the UMC Utrecht. His area of main clinical interest is cerebrovascular pathology. As a result, most of his research activities focus on carotid artery revascularization. In march 2013 he had 95 Pubmed registered publications. Besides, he is the director of the vascular animal experimental laboratory in Utrecht. He is associate editor of the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and editor of the Journal of Endovascular Therapy. Furthermore, he is regular reviewer for the most relevant journals in his field of expertise (Stroke, Journal of Neurology, Journal of Vascular Surgery, etc). Since 2012 he is secretary of the Dutch association of Vascular Surgeons. He is married with three kids and lives in Bilthoven, the Netherlands.
