Dirk Kuckling is a Professor of organic and macromolecular chemistry at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Paderborn, Paderborn, Germany. He studied chemistry at the University of Kiel, Kiel, Germany, and received his Ph.D. degree in 1994 in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. In 1994, he joined the Institute for Macromolecular Chemistry of the Dresden University of Technology, Dresden, Germany, as a Postdoc and started his own research group in 1995. In 2001/2002, he worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA. After his Habilitation degree in 2004, he was appointed in 2008 as a Full Professor at the University of Paderborn. The main focus of his work is the synthesis of novel functional polymers. For this purpose, different polymerization techniques are used to prepare polymers with designed structure and functionality. Such polymers were applied as actuator and sensor materials for microfluidic and biomedical applications.
