John Kortbeek is a specialist in general surgery and critical care. He was a graduate of the University of Alberta, completed general surgery as well as a Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Calgary followed by a Trauma Fellowship in Birmingham Alabama. His administrative roles have included serving as a Director of Trauma for the Calgary General Hospital and subsequently the Calgary Health Region as well as the Director of the Foothills Medical Center Intensive Care Unit. Kortbeek served as the President of the Trauma Association of Canada in 2001/2002; the Professor and Head of the University of Calgary and Calgary Health Region Departments of Surgery since 2006; the Chair of the ATLS subcommittee, Committee on Trauma, American College of Surgeons from 2006 to 2009.
