Thirumurthy Velpandian has completed his graduation in pharmaceutical sciences, B.pharm. degree, from Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, with a distinction in pharmacology, in 1992. With interest in pharmacology, he pursued his postgraduation M.S. degree in drug assay in pharmacology and Ph.D. degree from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree, in 1999, for his studies on liposome drug delivery to the eye. He served as a Senior Demonstrator (from 1999 to 2002) and DST Young Scientist Project Investigator (from 2002 to 2003) at the Department of Pharmacology, AIIMS. He has joined Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of AIIMS as an Assistant Professor of ocular pharmacology in 2003. Ever since, Velpandian has been working as a Faculty Member at the same department and at present he is the Additional Professor and Head of the Department of Ocular Pharmacology and Pharmacy, Dr. R. P. Centre, AIIMS. His laboratory is involved in the development of ocular drug delivery systems, studying of drug transporters in blood ocular barriers, drugs for ocular angiogenesis, ocular toxicity of systemically administered drugs, tear lipidomics, application of molecular dynamic principles for ocular QSPR studies, and pharmacogenomics.
