H. L. Bonkovsky
H. L. Bonkovsky is a holder of M.D. degree. He is the Vice President of research at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) and Carolinas Health Care System and the Director of The Liver-Biliary-Pancreatic Center and the Laboratory for Liver, Digestive, and Metabolic Research at CMC. Dr. Bonkovsky is also a Professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill and the University of CT Health Center (UCHC), Farmington, Conn, USA and a Professor of biology at UNC, Charlotte. Dr. Bonkovsky has more than 40 years of experience in clinical and translational research, including serving as a principal investigator for national, multicenter cooperative studies and in forging functional groups of clinical and basic research investigators. Dr. Bonkovsky has been the PI of numerous VA research awards and NIH RO1 grants and has been continually funded by NIH for over 25 years for translational studies on the regulation of hepatic heme metabolism. He is a PI for the HALT-C Trial, the NIH-sponsored effort to help patients with advanced, chronic hepatitis, C and PI for CMC of the National Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network. Throughout his career, Dr. Bonkovsky has trained numerous research and clinical residents and fellows in both basic and clinical research, and he now seeks especially to nurture younger investigators and to facilitate their development and success in clinical and translational research. Dr. Bonkovsky has been elected to a Membership in the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
