Xiaoyi Bao
University of Ottawa, Canada
Xiaoyi Bao is Canada Research Chair in Fibre Optics and Photonics. She is a Professor in Physics Department at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Her research interests include development and applications of the fibre sensors for temperature, strain, acoustic wave and vibration sensors for civil structural health-monitoring, nonlinear effects in fibers, dynamic polarization mode dispersion monitoring in aerial, buried and submarine fibers, impairments in high-speed communication systems, and mode-locked laser developments. She received the University of New Brunswick Merit Award in 1997. She was Applied Physics Division Chair of Canadian Association of Physics in 1998, and served on NSERC (Natural Science Research Council of Canada) Council from 1998 to 2001, and grant selection committee, 2003–2006. She served the research management committee (RMC) for ISIS (Intelligent Sensing and Innovative Structures) Canada —A National Centre of Excellence in Canada, 2002–2009, and research program committee (RPC) of Canadian Institute of Photonics (A National Centre of Excellence in Canada), 1999–2002. She received the Ontario Premier's Research Excellence Award in 2001, Ontario Distinguish Researcher Award in 2002. She received University of Ottawa Inventor of the Year Award for 2003, and Researcher of Year Award from Faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa for 2004. In 2006 she received the NCE (National Centers of Excellence) Chair’s Medal. She is Board Member of the Open Optics Journal, since 2007, and topical editor of Applied Optics.
