Gary C. An
Gary C. An was born in Oakland, Calif, USA, in 1964. He graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Miami, Fla, USA, in 1988, and did his general surgical residency at Cook County Hospital/University of Illinois, Chicago, from 1988 to 1993. He previously worked as a Trauma Surgeon at Cook County Hospital from 1997 to 2003, was the Director of the Burn Intensive Care Unit at Cook County Hospital from 2003 to 2006, and was a Trauma Surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, from 2006 to June 2010. He is now an Associate Professor of surgery and the Codirector of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Chicago. He has worked on the application of complex systems analysis to sepsis and inflammation since 1999, using primarily agent-based modeling to create mechanistic models of various aspects of the acute inflammatory response. He is a Founding Member of the Society of Complexity in Acute Illness (SCAI) and a past Secretary and current Member of the Board of Directors of SCAI. He is an external faculty member of the Center for Inflammation and Regenerative Modeling (CIRM) at the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition, he is the current President of the Swarm Development Group and was the host of the group’s annual meetings from 2008 to 2010. He is on the Editorial Boards of Critical Care Medicine and Shock.
