Fawzi Banat joined the PI in June 2011 as a Visiting Professor of chemical engineering. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Jordan, Jordan, and the Ph.D. degree from McGill University, QC, Canada. Dr. Banat has good experience in membrane desalination and water treatment. He is known for his work in applying and coupling membrane distillation process with renewable energy sources for desalination. Dr. Banat is the author or coauthor of more than 100 publications in refereed journals, among them 3 book chapters. He received many invitations as an invited speaker in many international conferences. In addition, he serves as a reviewer of numerous papers in well-known international journals. Dr. Banat was the advisor or coadvisor of 22 M.S. theses. Furthermore, he served on M.S. committees as the external examiner. Dr. Banat has been involved in international collaborative research efforts concerned with desalination (ADIRA and SMADES EU-funded projects). He has been active on many university committees and external boards. Furthermore, he was involved in scientific committees of many international conferences. Dr. Banat has served as the Dean of research at JUST University in Jordan and as the Dean of graduate studies and Dean of Natural Resources Engineering at the German-Jordanian University. Dr. Banat was the recipient of several awards in recognition of his research. For example, he was the recipient of Shoman Prize for Young Arab Researchers and the Hijjawi Award for Applied research. In 2006, he received the award of exceptional researcher from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Jordan. In recognition of his international research reputation, Dr. Banat was listed among the leading scientists in the Organization of Islamic Countries (OICs).
