Kundaranahalli R. Shivanna

Kundaranahalli R. Shivanna was born on 30 June 1940 and did the Ph.D. degree in botany at Delhi University in 1969. Shivanna joined the faculty of the Department of Botany, Delhi University in 1969 and retired as a Professor and Head of the department in 2002. After retirement, Shivanna joined Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment as Honorary Senior Fellow and presently continuing in this position. The expertise covers a broad area of reproductive biology of flowering plants. Moreover, Shivanna worked on pollen biology (viability, germination, and storage), pollen-pistil interaction and pollen biotechnology (production of interspecific and intergeneric hybrids through embryo rescue), and pollination ecology. Dr. Shivanna published over 150 research papers in international peer-reviewed journals and four books published by reputed publishers such as Springer and Cambridge University Press. 23 students have taken the Ph.D. degree under his supervision. Shivanna is recipient of several medals and other academic recognitions and fellow of all the four science academies of India and has been on the editorial boards of many journals and refereeing research papers for many journals and research projects of several funding agencies.
