Luiz Carlos Alcantara received the B.pharm. degree, from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), Ouro Preto, MG, Brazil, In 1996. In 1999, Alcantara received the M.S. degree from the Biochemistry Department, the São Paulo University, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. He received the Ph.D. degree from the Molecular Biology Department, the LASP/CPqGM/FIOCRUZ, Salvador, BA, Brazil in 2002. From 2003 to 2006, Alcantara served as a Postdoctoral Scientist at the Laboratories of Professor Bernardo Galvão-Castro (Brazil) and Professor Tulio de Oliveira (Oxford, UK) working on a project to develop the software LASP HTLV-1 Genotyping Tool. From 2003 to 2007, he was a Scientific Researcher Fellow of the HIV/HTLV Evolutionary Biology group, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Department, Public Health Advanced Laboratory, Gonçalo Moniz Research Center, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (LASP/CPqGM/FIOCRUZ), Salvador, BA, Brazil. From 2006 to 2007, Alcantara served as a Postdoctoral Scientist at the laboratory of Professor Bernardo Galvão-Castro (Brazil) and Professor Sharon Cassol (South Africa) working on a project for investigating the HTLV-1 molecular evolution. From 2008 till present, he works as a Scientific Researcher of biochemistry (permanent position) at the same place. From 2009 to 2011, he was a Researcher Fellow in the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health, Vaccine Branch group, Bethesda, MD, USA and in Dr. Genoveffa Franchini's Laboratory.
