María Guadalupe Guzmán

Maria G. Guzman, holder of M.D., Ph.D., Dr.S. degrees, virologist, from the Tropical Medicine Institute Pedro Kourí (IPK), Havana Cuba, has more than 30 years of experience working in virology and specifically in dengue. Her work has contributed to the knowledge of the pathogenesis, the clinic, the diagnosis and the epidemiology of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever. She has been the author of many papers including two new hypotheses. Also she has contributed to the improvement of the virological diagnosis of this disease in Cuba and abroad. She has been involved in the analysis of several dengue epidemics in Cuba and in the American region. She is considered an Expert by PAHO (Pan American Health Organization), WHO (World Health Organization), TDR (Tropical Research and Training Program), PDVI (Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative), and EC. Moreover, she has promoted the development of a Cuban group of scientists working in virology and a solid group for researching in dengue. She has contributed to the training of scientists of the American region. She has coordinated eleven international dengue courses. Guzman is a member of the Foundation Council of Global Forum for Health Research, a Coordinator of RELDA (network of dengue laboratories in the American region), the Cochair of the Dengue Reference Group (TDR/WHO), a Member of the Dengue Prevention Board in the American region (PDVI), a Counselor at PDVI Board, a Member of GT-dengue (Working Group on Dengue) at PAHO. Formerly, she was a Member of the Scientific Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) at TDR/WHO, and the WHO Dengue Vaccine Expert Committee. She serves as a Director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for Viral Diseases from 1994 to 2006, Academic of Merit of the Cuban Academic of Science and Researcher of Merit. Guzman is a Member of the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) and TWOS, a Reviewer, an Invited Editor of several Journals, and a Director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for the Study of Dengue and its Vector since 2005.
