Prabir Patra serves as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of Bridgeport (UB). He serves also as the Founding Director of newly established Biomedical Engineering Department at UB. He has research interests in multifunctional nanomaterials, polymeric nanocomposites, bioinspired nanomaterials, biomedical materials, tissue engineering, flexible nanoelectronics, bioelectronics, polymer gels, biosensors, label-free immunoassay, lab-on-chip protein sensor, piezoelectric soft materials, carbon nanotube and graphene architectures, and their device and hybrid nanomaterials for sustainable energy. He has published close to fifty research papers in peer-reviewed international journals. He has published widely in many conference proceedings, two book chapters, one U.S. patent, and several invention disclosures in his areas of expertise. He received his M.S. degree in chemistry and Ph.D. degree in materials science both from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. He did his postdoctoral research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and at Rice University. He continues to be a Research Scientist, mechanical engineering and materials science (MEMS), at Rice University. He is a strong advocate of the nanomaterials and their implications in biomedical engineering research. He travels widely to promote the research on nanomaterials and their application in biomedical engineering. Currently, he oversees a large research group whose central theme is interdisciplinary materials engineering research in biomedical engineering.
