Howard S. Smith is the Academic Director of Pain Management, Department of Anesthesiology, Albany Medical College, Albany, NY, USA. He has also served on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School as the Director of Pain Medicine, Presbyterian University Hospital, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA, and the Director of Cancer Pain, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA, respectively. Dr. Smith had served as the Director of Pain Management and Director of Pain Fellowship at Albany Medical College/Albany Medical Center Hospital. Dr. Smith has contributed questions and served as an Initial Committee Member of the joint Pain Management Examination Committee of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), the American Board of Physical Medical and Rehabilitation (ABPMR), and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Dr. Smith is board certified in internal medicine, nuclear medicine, and anesthesiology as well as having certification in pain management by both the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pain Medicine. He is also certified in Palliative Medicine by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine as well as in Addiction Medicine by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and has lectured at numerous national and international society meetings. Dr. Smith received the Leonard Bushnell Pain Award for Teaching Excellence in Pain Management Fellowship in 2001 from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of the Harvard Medical School. He has served as an expert reviewer for a number of publications including the journal, Pain. He also serves as an Associate Editor of Pain Physician and is on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Smith has authored numerous articles and book chapters, as well as multiple books.
