Phillip Popovich earned his Ph.D. degree in physiology from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA in 1995. He then completed formal immunology training at Ohio State as a Sandoz Research Scholar in the Laboratory of Dr. Caroline Whitacre (1995–1997). Since that time, Dr. Popovich has applied his multidisciplinary training in physiology, neurobiology, and immunology to problems of spinal cord injury (SCI). He is currently a Professor of neuroscience and holds the Ray W. Poppleton Research Designated Chair. In 2006, he was appointed as the Director of OSU Center for Brain and Spinal Cord Repair. Popovich's research is focused on understanding how the innate and adaptive immune systems influence the survival, differentiation, and growth of neurons and glia after injury to the central or peripheral nervous system.
