Kikuji Itoh graduated from the Veterinary School, Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Obihiro, Japan, in 1971. He received his Ph.D. degree from The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 1980. He is Associate Professor of veterinary public health at Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo since 1988 and Professor since 2010. He published more than 200 papers on pathogenic and commensal bacteria. His contributions to veterinary microbiology concern Campylobacter, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Citrobacter rodentum, and so forth. Itoh's major research is related to intestinal microbes, for example, host-intestinal bacteria cross-talk, physiological and microbiological normalization by using intestinal microbiota, gnotobiology, elimination of pathogenic bacteria from the intestine, probiotics, and prebiotics.
