Thomas Poon is a Senior Associate Dean of the Faculty at Pitzer College and a Professor of chemistry at the W.M. Keck Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges, three of the five undergraduate institutions that make up the Claremont Colleges Consortium in Claremont, California. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from the Fairfield University (Conn, USA) and his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles, Calif, USA. Poon was a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Postdoctoral Fellow at the Colby College (Me, USA) before joining the Faculty at the Randolph-Macon College (Va, USA) where he received the Thomas Branch Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1999. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Columbia University (NY, USA) in 2002 (and again in 2004) where he collaborated on projects in both research and education with Professor Nicholas J. Turro. His scholarship is in the areas of education and pedagogy, synthetic methodology in zeolites, zeolite photochemistry, natural products isolation, and reactions of singlet oxygen. Poon is a coauthor of two chemistry textbooks and has over twenty peer-reviewed articles in both laboratory and educational research. He has taught organic chemistry, forensic chemistry, upper-level courses in advanced laboratory techniques, and college writing. He is the an author of the organic chemistry instructional website http://www.ochem.comOCHeM.com, which has garnered accolades from various media outlets, including the journal Science (2004, vol. 303, p. 1115).
