Jorge Sequeiros received his M.D. degree in 1975, and a Ph.D. degree in 1990, and trained as an internist and as a medical geneticist (Postdoc Fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital, 1982–1985), and is now a Full Professor at ICBAS, the Director of UnIGENe (a neurogenetics research unit) and of CGPP (a centre for laboratory and clinical genetics services in the field of neurological diseases), IBMC, all at the University of Porto. He is the President of the Portuguese College of Medical Genetics at the National Medical Association, and a Member of CNECV (National Council for Ethics in the Life Sciences) and the ethics committee of the University of Porto. Sequeiros is a Member of the board of the ESHG and of its Public and Professional Policies Committee, and a representative at the Steering groups for the quality assurance for molecular genetic testing and human genetics research databases at OECD. He is a participant and member of the Steering group of EuroGentest (Genetic Testing in Europe, the national representative for ORPHANET and the organizer of the external quality assessment scheme in the spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) for EMQN. He was a Medical Genetics Expert at the European Society of Neurology and is on the Editorial Board of the journal Clinical Genetics. His major research interests are in genetics of rare neurological disorders (mainly the SCAs and Huntington disease), genetic testing and counseling, psychosocial genetics, and genetics and bioethics.
