Abba B. Gumel works as a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Manitoba, Canada. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Brunel University, London, UK, in 1993. His main area of research is in the qualitative theory of differential equations and dynamical systems and their applications in disease transmission dynamics. In particular, his research focuses on the use of mathematical theories and techniques to gain qualitative insight into the transmission dynamics and control of emerging and re-emerging diseases of public health importance. In addition, he has published over 90 research papers and has supervised numerous research students (undergraduate and graduate) and postdoctoral fellows. He has also received numerous awards in recognition of his scholarly research contributions. Professor Gumel currently works as the Director of the Institute of Industrial Mathematical Sciences at the University of Manitoba. Moreover, he serves as a Secretary of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematical Society since 2007 until 2011. He is also on the Editorial Boards of various journals such as Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering, Journal of Biological Systems, International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Engineering Sciences, African Diaspora Journal of Mathematics, and the Journal of the Nigerian Mathematical Society. Professor Gumel was elected as Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science as well as the African Academy of Sciences.
