Hiroshi Ikegami is currently a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, Kinki University School of Medicine, Osaka, Japan. He received his M.D. degree from Osaka University Medical School in 1981, and his Ph.D. degree from Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine in 1985, and then pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in the Immunology Section headed by George S. Eisenbarth at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. Following his fellowship, he returned to Osaka University Medical School in 1988 to head the Section of Diabetes and Molecular Genetics. He moved to Kinki University School of Medicine as a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes in 2006. In 1995, he received the Shionogi-Lilly Award (Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award) from the Japan Diabetes Society and the Young Investigator Award from the Japan Endocrine Society. He is an Associate Editor of BMC Genetics. His major area of research is the genetics and molecular mechanisms of type 1 diabetes.
