Akira Hirao

Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan

Akira Hirao was born in Tokushima, Japan, on December 4th, 1947. After he received his Ph.D. degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, in March 1975, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Alabama, USA, with Professor Charles U. Pittman, Jr. from October 1975 to March 1977. His professional carrier includes being an Assistant Professor (1977– 1983), Associate Professor (1983– 1996), and a Full Professor (1996– present). He was the Head of the Department of Polymer Chemistry twice, the Head of the Polymeric and Organic Materials Department twice, and a Vice Dean for the Chemistry Division of Undergraduate Student. He is currently a Member of the Editorial Board of Macromolecules, Polymer Journal, Macromolecular Research, and European Polymer Journal. He published more than 250 papers in referred international scientific journal and 30 books and reviews and gave 50 invited or plenary lectures at international scientific conference. His research interest covers synthesis and living anionic polymerization of functional monomers and precise synthesis of specially shaped polymers such as block copolymers, graft copolymers, highly dense comb-like copolymers, chain multifunctionalized polymers (in chain and chain-end), regular and asymmetric star-branched polymers, dendritic hyperbranched copolymers, surface control and analysis using block copolymers, and creation of nanostructured materials derived from hetero-phased polymers.
