Gang Cao

Gang Cao is a Professor of physics at the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. degree from Temple University, USA, in 1992 under the supervision of Dr. Jack E. Crow. Before joining the faculty of the University of Kentucky in 2002, he worked at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, USA, initially as a Postdoctoral Researcher from 1992 to1995, and then as a Staff Scientist from 1995 to 2001. He has conducted pioneering studies of single-crystal 4d- and 5d-transition-metal oxides such as ruthenates and iridates that display novel electric and magnetic properties and complex phase diagrams resulting from competing electron-electron, spin-orbit, p-d hybridization, crystalline electric field, and electron-lattice interactions. He has also synthesized large numbers of single-crystal samples to elucidate the effects of crystal anisotropy and low dimensionality on the exotic electric and magnetic properties of 4d- and 5d-transition metal oxides. Dr. Cao has published more than 125 papers in peer-reviewed journals and organized international conferences, such as Workshop in Novel Electronic Materials in 2005 and the 2nd Workshop on Novel Electronic Materials in 2008.
