Joao Manuel R. S. Tavares graduated in mechanical engineering from University of Porto, Porto, Portugal (1992). In 1995, he obtained an M.S. degree in electronic and computer engineering, in the field of industrial informatics, also at University of Porto. In 2001, he obtained a Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the same university. From 1995 to 2000, he was a Researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB). Since 2001, he has been Senior Researcher and Project Coordinator at the Laboratory of Optical and Experimental Mechanics (LOME) of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management (INEGI). Also, since 2001, he has been Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEMec) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). His main research areas include computational vision, computational mechanics, scientific visualization, human-computer interaction, and new product development. Since 2001, he has been Supervisor and Cosupervisor of several M.S. and Ph.D. theses. He is coauthor of more than 300 papers in national and international journals and conferences and coeditor of eleven international books and guest-editor of several special issues of international journals. Also, he has been involved in several research projects, both as researcher and as scientific coordinator. He has been cochairman of various international conferences, such as CompIMAGE 2006/2010/2012, VipIMAGE 2007/2009/2011, EUROMEDIA 2008, BioDENTAL 2009/2012, IMAGAPP 2009, TMSi 6, and CIBEM 10 and of numerous minisymposia, workshops, and thematic sessions. In addition, he has been a member of scientific and organizing committees of several national and international conferences.
