Cumaraswamy Vipulanandan

Cumaraswamy Vipulanandan is the Chairman and Professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Houston, Tex, USA. He is the Director of the Center for Innovative Grouting Materials and Technology (CIGMAT) and the Texas Hurricane Center for Innovative Technology (THC-IT) at the University of Houston. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill, USA, and the B.S. degree in civil engineeringfrom the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. His current research interests are in the areas of materials, geotechnical, and geoenvironmetal engineering. He has been a Principal Investigator or a Coprincipal Investigator for 60 funded projects since 1984, amounting to over 6 millions. His work has resulted in more than 150 refereed papers and over 100 presentations at national and international conferences. He was the Editor of eight special publications by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) on grouting, recycled materials, advances in measurement and modeling of soil behavior, advances in deep foundations, advances in designing and testing deep foundations, expansive clay soils and vegetative influences on shallow foundations, and pipelines and fracture of concrete materials. In 2005, he received the Fluor Daniel Faculty Excellence Award, the highest award given by the Cullen College of Engineering, University of Houston. In 2002, he received the Senior Faculty Research Excellence Award from the Cullen College of Engineering, University of Houston. He has also received several other awards. He was the Keynote Speaker at the International Workshop on Deep Foundations in 2007 in Japan. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). He is very active in a number of technical committees of these professional societies.
