B.V.R. Chowdari serves as the Executive Director of NUS-India Research Initiative (IRI), Singapore, an office set up exclusively for facilitating interactions between NUS (National University of Singapore) and the Indian universities and institutes. Professor Chowdari obtained his Ph.D. degree (1968) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. He works as a Professor of physics at NUS. His current field of research focuses on condensed matter physics and materials science. Based on his original research he has published 210 papers in international reputed referred journals and trained 20 students for higher degree. He has 40 years of teaching and administrative experience at the university level. He has worked as a Visiting Associate Professor at University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa, USA, and a Visiting Professor at University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland. He received the Officer in the Order of Academic Palms award from the French Government. Recently he has been elected as the President of the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS). Professor Chowdari founded the Asian Society for Solid State Ionics in Singapore in 1986 and served as its Executive Secretary and Treasurer till 2000. He also assumes the role of President and Treasurer for the last fourteen years in the same society. Serving as the President of Materials Research Society of Singapore (MRS-S) for the last 12 years, he has organized the first six biennial International Conferences on Materials for Advanced Technologies and currently is serving as Chairman for the 7th conference in the same series with expected participation of 3,000 delegates including a few Nobel laureates. Recently he is elected as a Member of the International Council for Sciences (ICSU), Regional Committee for Asia and Pacific.
