Rita Berisio was born in 1972, Naples, Italy. She graduated in chemistry from the University of Naples Federico II, Napoli, Italy, 1995. From 1996 to 1998, she worked at the European Molecular Biology Lab in Hamburg and in 1999 she received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Naples. In 2001, she became a permanent Researcher at the Institute of Biostructures and Bioimaging (IBB) of the Italian Research National Council (CNR), Naples, Italy, and in 2002 she became a Senior Researcher at the same institute. Berisio has been awarded the prize of the Italian Crystallography Association (AIC) in 2006 for her contribution to structural biology. Her research activities are focused on structural biology of macromolecules of biological interest. Berisio works as the coauthor of about 90 publications in international journals, such as Nature Structural Biology, Molecular Cell, Journal of the American Chemical Society, PNAS structure, and one international patent. She has been a Referee for journals like Plos Pathogens, the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Molecular Biology, and Journal of the American Chemical Society and a Guest Editor for a number of journals. Berisio has been responsible for a number of regional, national, and international funding initiatives. Currently, Berisio serves as the International Coordinator of a project funded by the Mizutani Foundation for Glycoscience, PI for IBB-CNR of the cost action (European cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research)-BM1003 microbial cell surface determinants of virulence as targets for new therapeutics in cystic fibrosis, from 2010 to 2014, and PI of a PRIN project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Research.
