Marcia Pinto Alves Mayer

Marcia Pinto Alves Mayer is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Microbiology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of São Paulo, Brazil. She graduated from the Dental School of the same university and became a specialist in periodontology. She got her Ph.D. degree in biological sciences from the University of São Paulo. Dr. Mayer received postdoctoral training at the Department of Microbiology, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, from 1996 to 1998, and later spent a sabbatical year at the Department of Immunology at the Forsyth Institute (2007-2008). Mayer's research is related to bacterial diversity in the oral cavity, particularly the correlation between phylogeny and virulence and immune response. Other interests refer to the use of animal models to evaluate host-parasite interactions and therapeutic approaches.
