Sheila Patrick serves as a Professor of molecular medical bacteriology within the Centre for Infection and Immunity, Queen’s University, Belfast, UK. She has a B.S. (Hon) degree and a Ph.D. degree in microbiology from Edinburgh University and was also awarded a D.S. degree from the same institution. Patrick is an expert in anaerobic bacteriology, in particular in relation to opportunistic infection arising from the normal human microbiota. Her interests focus on whole-genome sequencing and the virulence/commensal dynamic in relation to Propionibacterium acnes and Bacteroides fragilis. Professor Patrick has a large number of publications in peer-reviewed journals and has written numerous book chapters in relation to anaerobic infections. She has also coauthored the chapter Propionibacterineae in the recent 2012 edition of Bergey’s Manuel of Systematic Bacteriology.
