Vassya Bankova obtained her Ph.D. degree in natural product chemistry from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), Sofia, Bulgaria. She serves as the Head of Chemistry of Natural Substances Lab at the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry, BAS. Bankova served as a guest researcher at a number of academic institutions, including the Ruhr University of Bochum, Bochum, Germany, the Bandeirante University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the Institute of Molecules of Biological Interest, Naples, Italy. Her research interests are directed towards search for new biologically active compounds from unexplored biological subjects (endemic plants, mushrooms, bee products) and development of modern reliable methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis of the active components in complex extracts of natural products. Bankova is also involved in the bee product of propolis (bee glue); its chemistry; plant origin; biological activity; health-promoting potential analysis; standardization. Bankova has more than 160 publications in different scientific fields with an h index of 26. She is a Member of the International Honey Commission, where she is responsible for the Propolis group. Bankova is also on the Editorial Boards of Chemistry Central Journal and Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
