Manuel Vazquez-Carrera obtained his Pharmacy degree from the University of Barcelona, Spain, in 1990. He got a predoctoral grant of the Generalitat de Catalunya for young researchers during the period from 1991 to 1994. He received his Ph.D. degree in December 1994 , and in 1995, he obtained a grant of the European Science Foundation for a postdoctoral stage at the Institut de Biologie Animale, UniversitÉ de Lausanne, Switzerland, under the supervision of Dr. Walter Wahli. Carrera serves as an Associate Professor in pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, the University of Barcelona. Moreover, he is a member of several boards and committees and the present Secretary of the Spanish Society of Pharmacology. Carrera has around 100 international publications. The topic of his research group is the study of the effects of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) in metabolic diseases, including cardiac metabolism, insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. His research group is one of the 32 research groups included in the Spanish Biomedical Research Centre in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders (CIBERDEM), which is a Spanish public research consortium to promote research into diabetes and associated metabolic disorders.
