Luca Stanco

Luca Stanco was born in 1957, in Monselice, Italy. He studied at University of Padova, where he was awarded his Italian degree in physics in 1980, with a theoretical work on the stability of beam orbits in storage ring machines. He spent the next year at the KFA physical centre of Julich, Germany, and the following two years at the laboratory LAL, Orsay, France. Back to Padova, he got, in 1987, the Doctorate degree in physics with a research on glueballs (hadronic states composed only by gluons and no quarks). Since 1985, he is involved with the ZEUS experiment, Hamburg, Germany, with different roles and responsibilities. At present, he is the group leader of the affiliation in Padova, Italy. In 1987 and during the following years, he contributed to the development of one of the two most important Monte Carlo software simulations used in the High Energy Physics (HEP), HERWIG. In 1991-1992, he spent a sabbatical year at Fermilab, Chicago, USA, where the top quark was discovered in 1993-1994. As a Member of the CDF collaboration, he contributed to the different analysis which brought to the discovery, pioneering the analysis in the “full hadronic mode”. In 1999, he organized a group of physicist to be involved in the OPERA collaboration, the new experiment which is looking for the discovery of appearance neutrino oscillations from muon to tau flavours. He was one of the major actors in the development of the detectors, he is responsible for the spectrometers, group leader of the Padova institution, member of several boards. The experiment started its activity last year in August with an excellent performance, as reported by the world media. It is expected to continue to collect data for the next 5 years. In 2002, he was awarded by ISI-Thomson as one of the 15 world scientists in physics with most of citations in the decade 1991–2001. In 2002, he acceded the position of Dirigente di Ricerca at INFN, in Padova.
