Luca Giovanella was born in Verbania, Italy, in 1966. He completed his formation and discussed his doctoral thesis (cum laude) at the Medical School, the University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy, in 1991. Subsequently, he obtained the postgraduate degrees in nuclear medicine and endocrinology in 1995 and 2000, respectively at the University of Milan, Italy and the Executive Master degree in health organisation and human resources management in 2000 at the Politecnico Universitario of Milan, Italy. Giovanella was a Consultant at the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital “Fondazione Macchi” of Varese, Italy, from 1993 to 2002. He also chaired the Thyroid Unit and the Laboratory for Endocrinology from 1995 to 2002. Since 2003, Giovanella is the Chief of the Department of Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT Centre at the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland of Bellinzona. In addition, he also holds a Consultant position at the Department of Laboratory Medicine of Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOLAB) in Bellinzona, Switzerland. His researches are focused on the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases and, particularly, on the role of serum markers (i.e. thyroglobulin, calcitonin) and nuclear imaging procedures (i.e. SPET, PET) to optimize thyroid cancer management and followup.
