Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands

F. H J Claas has got a Ph.D. degree. He works as a Director of the Eurotransplant Reference Laboratory and a Professor of immunogenetics of transplantation at the Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden, the Netherlands. During his university study in biochemistry, he became interested in transplantation immunology during a one-year project at the Department of Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion headed by Jon van Rood, the founder of Eurotransplant. In 1976, he joined the group of van Rood, and since that time he has combined his work in the histocompatibility laboratory with research in the field of transplantation immunology. The main topics of his research are the differential immunogenicity of HLA mismatches in clinical transplantation and immune mechanisms leading to transplantation tolerance. The studies of his group have generated more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he was the initiator of a special program within Eurotransplant to enhance transplantation of highly sensitized patients on basis of acceptable HLA mismatches. Claas is an active Member of different immunogenetic societies as reflected by his past presidency of the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) and membership of the Board of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). In the field of transplantation, he is active as the President of Europdonor and a Member of the boards of Eurotransplant, the Dutch Transplantation Society, and Eurocord.
