Timo Muotka received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä, Finland in 1994. Since 2004, he has been holding a position as a Professor in aquatic ecology at the University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland. This position is shared between the university and the Finnish Environment Institute. His main interests are in the fields of biodiversity research, community ecology, and macroecology, with an emphasis on freshwater ecosystems, particularly streams and other running-water ecosystems. The more applied aspects of his work relate to restoration ecology, conservation biology, and invasion biology.
