Fernando de la Calle

Fernando de la Calle was born in Granada, Spain, in 1961. He received his degree in biological science and his Ph.D. degree from the Universitat de les Illes Balears in Mallorca and the Department of Molecular Biology, Autonomous University of Madrid, in 1986 and 1998, respectively. He received the executive MBA degree from IDE-CESEM, Madrid in 2005. From 1986 to 1988, de la Calle was a Research Fellow at L. Norman and CIB (CSIC) in Madrid. He joined PharmaMar in 1988 as Microbiologist, and, since 1999, he is Head Manager of the Microbiology R&D Department Drug Discovery Area. The activities of his research group are focused on the study of the marine microorganisms as potential producers of antitumor compounds and the design of biotechnological processes to supply drug substances. He has been one of the authors of the current manufacturing process of Yondelis, a marine-derived compound recently approved by the EMEA (European Union) for the treatment of soft-tissue sarcomas (2007) and recurrent ovarian cancer in combination with Caelyx (2009).
