Stefan Samko

Stefan Samko was born in 1941 in Rostov-na-Donu, Russia. He works as a Full Professor at the Rostov State University and at the Universidade of Algarve and as a Fulbright Professor (USA, 1992-1993), and he is an Honorable Member of the Academy of Superior Schools in Ukraine. He graduated from the Mathematics Department of the Rostov State Univeresity (RGU) in 1964 and did his postgraduate studies there (from 1965 to 1967) under supervision of F. D. Gakhov. He defended his Ph.D. thesis in 1967 in Belarussian State University (Minsk) and the Ph.D. thesis (USSR) in 1978 in Steklov Mathematics Institute (Moscow). He served as an Associate Professor in RGU from 1968 to 1979 and as a Full Professor there from 1979 till present. He served as the Chair of Differential and Integral Equations in RGU from 1980 to 1995 and as the Dean of the Department of Mathematics in RGU from 1979 to 1981. Since 1995, he works also at the University of Algarve, Portugal, and he is a Member of the Scientific center CEAF at Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon. He serves as a Coordinator of the Harmonic Analysis, Operator Theory and Applications Group and of the corresponding projects. He authored the following books: Equations with Involutive Operators and Their Applications (2002), Fractional Integrals and Derivatives, Theory and Applications (1993), and Hypersingular Integrals and Their Applications (1998). He is a Member of the editorial boards of international journals such as Integral Transforms and Special Functions, Russian Mathematics Fractional Calculus, Journal of Mathematical Inequalities, and Applied Analysis Proceedings of A. Razmadze Mathematical Institute. His main scientific interests are fractional calculus, function spaces, and singular and hypersingular operators.
