Furong Gao acts as a Chair Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong. He received his B.E. degree (1985) in automation from East China Institute of Petroleum, Beijing, China, and his M.E. (1989) and Ph.D. (1993) degrees in chemical engineering from McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada. Gao worked at Moldflow International Ltd., Melbourne, Australia, as a Senior Research Engineer in charge of technical development of Intelligent Process Control Group before joining HKUST in 1995. Besides being a Professor at the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, he serves as the Division Director of Advanced Manufacturing & Automation and the Associate Dean of HKUST's Fok Ying Tung Graduate School. He has authored more than 300 journal and conference publications. His research interests include modeling, optimization, control of polymer processing processes, and batch process monitoring and control.
