Furong Gao is a Chair Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong. He received his B.Eng. degree (1985) in automation from East China Institute of Petroleum and his M.Eng. (1989) and Ph.D. degrees (1993) in chemical engineering from McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada. Dr. Gao worked in Moldflow International Ltd., Melbourne, VIC, Australia, as a Senior Research Engineer in charge of technical development of Intelligent Process Control Group before joining HKUST in 1995. Besides his Professorship in the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, he is the Division Director of Advanced Manufacturing & Automation and the Associate Dean of HKUST’s Fok Ying Tung Graduate School. He has authored more than 300 journal and conference publications, and he is a recipient of many conference and journal best papers. His research interests include modeling, optimization, and control of polymer processing processes; batch process monitoring and control.
