Alina Pyka was born on May 28, 1961, in Bytom, Poland. She graduated at Silesian University of Katowice, Poland, and obtained an M.S. degree in chemistry in 1985. She was then employed at the Department of General and Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Faculty of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice. Ph.D. thesis (1990) was concerned with chromatographic investigation of isomer disubstituted derivatives of benzene. She obtained the habilitation in 2000, in analytical chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, Jagiellonian University, Krakow. She was an Associate Professor from 2004 to 2009 at the Pharmaceutical Faculty, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice. In 2009, she was awarded the title of Professor, the conductor held at the Faculty of Chemistry, Jagiellonian University, Krakow. She specializes in liquid chromatography and she is the author of more than 170 scientific articles in major scientific journals and books. In 2003, she was nominated as the Chairman of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the Medical University of Silesia. Her main research interests are focused on the optimization of separation conditions of organic compounds including drugs, the application of new visualizing reagents to different classes of organic compounds including drugs, the application of selected structural descriptors in QSRR, QSPR, and QSAR analysis, the lipophilic investigations of selected compounds about biomedical significance, and the application of TLC and densitometry to quantitative determination of selected drugs.
