Maria Tsironi was born in Athens in 1968. She has studied medicine at the Medical School of the University of Athens and graduated in 1992. She was then specialized in internal medicine at the first Department of Internal Medicine, Laikon Hospital, University of Athens. She had obtained her Ph.D. degree in 2002, working on the myocardial perfusion of sickle thalassemic patients. Since then, she was working as a consultant of internal medicine, especially with hemoglobinopathy patients, till 2008. She was elected as an Assistant Professor of internal medicine at the Department of Nursing, University of Peloponnese. Her current scientific interests are focused on myocardial dysfunction in hemoglobinopathies, endothelium disorders in hemoglobinopathy patients, and the effects of exercise on the cardiovascular system, focusing on healthy ultramarathon runners.
