Domenico Umbrello

Domenico Umbrello obtained his Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering in 2005 from the University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy. He currently works as an Assistant Professor of manufacturing at University of Calabria since 2005. From 2011 to 2012, Umbrello served as a Visiting Professor of manufacturing at the Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky, USA. His scientific activities include experimental and numerical analysis of machining operations, advanced empirical rheological models for hard materials, study of surface integrity in machining, analysis of cryogenic machining processes, analysis of tribological effects in manufacturing processes, and friction stir welding. He is a Member of CIRP (Associate Member since August 2012), ESAFORM (since 2003), and AITEM (since 2001). In the ESAFORM, he has been also assigned by the Board of Directors as a Coordinator of minisymposium on “Machining and cutting” from June 2009. Dr. Umbrello serves as a reviewer of several international journals, Associate Technical Editor of Machining Science and Technology, and a Guest Editor of the International Journal of Machining and Machinability of Materials, Inderscience Publishers, where he has also been a Member of the Editorial Board since June 2008. Dr. Umbrello is a member of several international scientific committees and he was the Technical Secretary of the10th CIRP International WMMO held in Reggio Calabria (Italy) in 2007. He has received several prizes and awards like the 2005 AITEM Outstanding Young Manufacturing Research Award, the Best Conference Paper Award (the paper Umbrello et al. (2009), pp. 655-662, 12th CIRP WMMO, Spain), and the Best Paper Award (within the CIRP WMMO conference series 2005–2009). Dr. Umbrello is a coauthor of about 150 scientific publications, published on international journals or on the proceedings of national and international conferences.
