Elaine E. Steinke
Elaine E. Steinke works as a Professor of nursing at Wichita State University, Wichita, Kan, USA. Her professional career includes over 35 years of experience in acute care, critical care, cardiovascular nursing, and university professorships. She is recognized nationally and internationally for her investigation of sexual counseling needs of patients with heart disease and their partners. Dr. Steinke is a Fellow of the American Heart Association. Her initial research focused on sexuality and aging, and later work investigated sexual concerns of heart patients who had experienced heart attack, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, and heart failure. She has investigated psychological responses such as anxiety and depression in cardiac populations. A primary goal of her research is to develop and test interventions for patient education and sexual counseling that can be implemented in practice by health professionals. Dr. Steinke has received extramural funding for her work with funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research. Additional funding has been awarded through professional organizations, local agencies, and internal funding. Dr. Steinke’s research and clinical articles have been published in over 40 journal articles and in numerous book chapters. She produced a videotape for patients on how to resume sexual activity after a heart attack, heart surgery, heart failure, and implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Dr. Steinke has presented her work to international, national, regional, and local audiences through both invited and juried presentations.
