Ravi S. Sharma

Ravi S. Sharma is an Associate Professor at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at the Nanyang Technological University since January 2004. He was concurrently Founding Director (India Strategy) at NTU for a 2-year term. Ravi had spent the previous 10 years in industry as Asean Communications Industry Principal at IBM Global Services and Director of the Multimedia Competency Centre of Deutsche Telekom Asia. Ravi’s teaching, consulting, and research interests are in multimedia applications, services, and strategies. His work has appeared in leading journals, conferences, trade publications, and the broadcast media. He has also coauthored a graduate level text on KM tools and techniques. He has been teaching IT and management courses since 1985 (in Canada, Singapore, Dubai, Vietnam, Indonesia, and India) and enjoys this role as educator and mentor immensely. As consulting engagements, Ravi has served as Telecommunication Industry Advisor to Frost & Sullivan’s technology practice in the Asia Pacific, Vice President of the Homeportal Inc. present in Asia, and business advisor to several local startups. He has also provided strategic technical advice to the respective regulators for Singapore’s Digital TV and Broadband Multimedia implementation efforts, Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor, the ITU’s WG on telecommunications tariffs, and currently Singapore’s Expert Group on interactive digital media. Ravi received his Ph.D. degree in engineering from the University of Waterloo and is a Chartered Engineer, UK, and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Communications Surveys, the Journal of Knowledge, Technology & Society, and the International Journal of Digital Multimedia Broadcasting. He also sits on the advisory boards of several professional and nonprofit organizations. He lives in Singapore with his family.
