Ilana Renault Zalcberg

Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Bone Marrow Transplantation Center (CEMO), Instituto Nacional de Câncer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Ilana Zalcberg Renault graduated in clinical medicine at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Brazil, in 1989. She achieved an M.S. degree in molecular immunology at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm University, Sweden, under the supervision of Dr. Goran Moller. Dr. Renault also worked for 2 years as a Fellow in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Umeå University, Sweden. In 1993, Dr. Renault started a Ph.D. program in molecular hematology and oncology at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, FIOCRUZ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since 1996, she is the Coordinator of the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Center at the Instituto Nacional de Câncer (INCA), being actively engaged in standardization of cancer diagnosis and translational research. In 2000, her laboratory was funded to become reference in molecular biology diagnosis of pediatric leukemias of a National program (Child and Life), partnership of the Brazilian Pediatric Oncology Society, Bank of Brazil Foundation and Health Ministry. Her laboratory also participates as laboratory arm (molecular cytogenetics) of a Phase III multicentric clinical trial for the treatment of multiple myeloma. Ongoing research in multiple myeloma, funded by national and international agencies, includes the cytogenetic and molecular characterization of genetic and epigenetic abnormalities for risk stratification of this disease.
