Matthias Bürgi is currently heading the research group Land Use History at the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL in Birmensdorf, Switzerland. He obtained a university degree in environmental sciences and a Ph.D. degree at the Department of Forest Sciences at ETH Zurich. His Ph.D. thesis on woodland history of the Swiss lowlands was awarded with the medal of the ETH. In 2006, he received the venia legendi at the Department of Environmental Sciences of ETH Zurich in Historical Ecology. Prior to coming to WSL, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard Forest, Harvard University, Petersham, MA, USA and at the University of Wisconsin Madison, Wis, USA. He specialized in historical ecology, woodland history, and landscape ecology. He focuses on interdisciplinary landscape studies, combining ecological and historical methods in order to analyze and understand driving forces of landscape and ecosystem changes during the last 100 to 200 years.
