Balbir Singh obtained his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Liverpool, UK (1979–1984) and worked as a Postdoctoral Senior Research Assistant (1984–1988) on sequestration of P. falciparum at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). He then conducted research on molecular aspects of sequestration at LSTM as a Beit Medical Fellow (1988–1991). He returned to Malaysia as a Lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia (1992–1998) and joined Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in 1999 where he is now the Director of the Malaria Research Centre (MRC), UNIMAS. The research at MRC is mainly focussed on molecular epidemiological, population genetic and clinical studies on P. knowlesi, which his research group found to be a major cause of human malaria in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo.
