Nikos D. Giokaris

Nikos D. Giokaris received the B.S. degree in physics and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Athens and the University of Chicago, in 1973 and 1981, respectively. From 1981 to 1984, he held Research Associate positions at Rochester University and Fermilab. From 1984 to 1985, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame. From 1985 to 1993 and from 1993 to 1996, he held Assistant and Associate Professor positions at Rockefeller University. In 1996, he was appointed as an Associate Professor at the Physics Department of the University of Athens. He participated in a variety of fixed target experiments with hadron, neutrino, and electron beams. Since 1985, he has been a Member of the CDF collider experiment at the Tevatron of Fermilab and since 1994 he is a Member of the ATLAS experiment at CERN where he has led a University of Athens group by participating in the construction and the commissioning of the Hadronic Tile Calorimeter. Among his main contributions are his proposal and the development of high pressure gas calorimetry for high energy/high luminosity colliders, his proposal to use the total transverse energy in top-antitop quark candidate events to separate the signal from the background and, more recently, his proposal and the development of a technique to use the lepton (electron and muon) transverse momentum to obtain an accurate measurement of the top quark mass. He has coauthored more than 300 papers resulting in more than 18000 citations worldwide. Since 1994 he has been a Member of the Physics Advisory Committee for particle physics of the Joint Institute for NuclearResearch, Dubna. He has been invited to referee papers for Physical Review Letters and Nuclear Instruments and Methods. His present research interests include the precise measurement of the top quark mass with CDF and ATLAS and the search for the Standard Model Higgs particle with the ATLAS experiment.
