Renato de Lima Santos graduated from the Veterinary School and earned an M.S. degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil. He finished a Ph.D. degree on veterinary pathology at Texas A&M University (USA). He has been a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of California at Davis (USA) and currently an Associate Professor of veterinary pathology at UFMG. His research interests are primarily salmonellosis, brucellosis, and leishmaniasis. He is a Researcher of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), and he is a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. He currently holds the positions of a Provost for research at UFMG and President of the Brazilian Association for Veterinary Pathology (ABPV).
