Lieven Verschaffel (1957) obtained in 1984 the degree of Doctor in Educational Sciences at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. From 1979 until 2000, he obtained several subsequent research positions at the Fund for Scientific Research, Flanders. Since 2000, he serves as a Full Professor in educational sciences of that same university. His major research interests are teaching and learning of (mathematical) problem-solving skills, metacognitive and affective aspects of (mathematics) learning, and mathematics education. Verschaffel is a Member of the editorial board of numerous international journals and book series in the domain of educational sciences and mathematics education. He is Supervisor of a major research project: Developing Adaptive Expertise in Mathematics Education and he serves as the Coordinator of the Scientific “Stimulating Critical and Flexible Cognitions” and of a Scientific Network that stimulates and supports research collaboration between several Belgian and European teams on this topic. Verschaffel has been a member of the evaluation committee of more than 40 doctoral dissertations in other universities.The publication list of Verschaffel contains about 125 international journal articles, 120 national journal articles, 25 international and national books, 110 chapters in international and national books, and 70 full papers published in international congress proceedings. He has been asked to give plenary talks at several major international conferences in his area of research. For his contribution to (mathematics) education, he was elected in 2009 as Member of the Flemish Royal Academia for Sciences and Arts of Belgium.
