John F. Butterworth, aFter receiving the M.D. degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Va, USA, completed a clinical research fellowship in the Neurosurgery Department at VCU. Butterworth completed the clinical training in anesthesia and a two-year postdoctoral fellowship (the latter in the laboratory of Dr. Gary Strichartz) at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Mass, USA. Butterworth spent 20 years on the faculty of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC, USA. Since, July 2005, Butterworth has been the R. K. Stoelting Professor and the Chairman of the Anesthesia Department at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Ind, USA.
