Bernhard Metzler was born in Egg, Austria, in 1969. He received an electrical engineering degree (summa cum laude) and then the M.D. degree from the University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria, in 1996. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of General and Experimental Pathology (Professor G. Wick) at the University of Innsbruck, Medical School, Austria. In 2003 he got the “Venia legendi” for Internal Medicine at the University of Innsbruck, Medical School. Presently he has the position of Assistant Medical Director of the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Division of Cardiology, University Hospital of Innsbruck. In 2003 he completed the M.S. degree in health care and hospital management. He is author of more than 60 peer-reviewed publications in international scientific journals, and supervisor of more than 20 doctoral theses. He is mainly interested in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (in vivo mouse model), cardiac MRT and acute cardiac care.
